Minor Ailment Scheme:

All pharmacies can provide advice and sell over-the-counter medicines to treat minor ailments. Pharmacies marked Yes under 'Minor Ailments' are able to provide treatment without prescription for the following common problems: Water Infection, Impetigo, Bacterial Eye Infection (a charge of £8.40 applies for patients who normally pay for prescriptions; free for exempt patients). They can also provide over-the-counter medicines to treat the following common problems free of charge for patients who do not pay for their prescriptions: Athlete's Foot, Conjunctivitis, Cold Sores, Hayfever, Cystitis, Thrush, Ring Worm.


Emergency supply of medicines when GP practices are closed:

All pharmacies may, under certain circumstances, dispense a limited supply of certain prescription-only medicines without a prescription if the patient can provide evidence that they have been prescribed that medicine before (for example, by showing a repeat prescription slip or box of used medicine). This is a Private service, so the patient will have to pay for the medicine.


Specialist Medicines Service:

Pharmacies (marked *) providing this service will hold in stock particular medicines which may be needed (on prescription) urgently to treat patients who are very unwell or dying at home.


Phlebotomy (Blood) appointments are now available to book through EMIS Access.  Please remember these appointments are for routine blood appointments (for anyone who has bloods done regularly for medication or a medical condition) or a blood test which the doctor has requested you have done.  If you have any queries please contact reception on 01935 850225.  Thank you.

MSK Physiotherapist in Practice

Queen Camel Medical Centre can offer first point of contact (FPOC) access to a musculoskeletal physiotherapist on a Wednesday morning.  Patients DO NOT have to have seen or spoken to a GP to access these clinics.  They specifically treat people with recent onset joint and back pain not associated with any other medical condition.  To book an appointment at one of these clinics ring our reception team and request an MSK Physio appointment, be prepared to answer a few questions about your condition to ensure you are being seen in the most appropriate clinic.  Please note, there is also the opportunity to see an MSK practitioner at Bruton Surgery, Millbrook Surgery and Milborne Port Surgery at other times throughout the week. These appointments can also be booked via the Queen Camel reception team.



A vaccine to prevent shingles, a common, painful skin disease is available on the NHS to certain people in their 70s.


The shingles vaccine is given as a single injection into the upper arm. Unlike the flu jab, you'll only need to have the vaccination once and you can have it at any time of the year.


The shingles vaccine is expected to reduce your risk of getting shingles. If you are unlucky enough to go on to have the disease, your symptoms may be milder and the illness shorter.


Shingles can be very painful and uncomfortable. Some people are left with pain lasting for years after the initial rash has healed. And shingles is fatal for around 1 in 1,000 over-70s who develop it.


It's fine to have the shingles vaccine if you've already had shingles. The shingles vaccine works very well in people who have had shingles before and it will boost your immunity against further shingles attacks.


Who can have the shingles vaccination?


You are eligible for the shingles vaccine if you are aged 70 or 78 years old.


In addition, anyone who was eligible for immunisation in the previous three years of the programme but missed out on their shingles vaccination remains eligible until their 80th birthday. This includes:


  • anyone in their 70s who were born after 1 September 1942 and not yet had the vaccine.
  • anyone aged 79 years old who have missed out on the vaccine in previous years.

People aged 80 and over are not eligible for the Shingles Vaccination because the vaccine becomes less effective as people get older.

You can have the shingles vaccination at any time of year, though many people will find it convenient to have it at the same time as their annual flu vaccination.

Who should not have the shingles vaccination?

You should not have the shingles vaccine if you:

  • have a weakened immune system (for example, because of cancer treatment , if you take steroid tablets , if you've had your spleen removed, or if you've had an organ transplant – your doctor will advise whether this applies to you)
  • you've had a serious allergic reaction (including an anaphylactic reaction ) to a previous dose of any of the substances in the vaccine, such as neomycin and gelatin – again, your GP can advise you if this applies to you
  • you've had a serious allergic reaction (including an anaphylactic reaction) to a previous dose of the chickenpox vaccine
  • have an untreated TB infection

Improving Access


Queen Camel, Bruton, Milborne Port, Millbrook and Wincanton GP Practices are now working collaboratively to offer appointments to their own and each other’s patients who cannot easily access primary care services during normal working hours. Four of the practices in turn will offer extra appointments with a health care professional between 6.30pm and 8.00pm Monday – Friday and Queen Camel will offer appointments (for all practices) between 9.00am and 10.30am on a Saturday. Millbrook Surgery will additionally offer appointments from 7.30 – 8.00am on a Tuesday.  The appointments will be with the host practice staff, not necessarily your registered practice staff.


This is a new initiative across Somerset whereby patients can make appointments at extended times (up until 8pm at night Monday-Friday and on Saturday mornings) at other practices across the local area. Appointment types will vary some being face to face and some on the telephone and there will be a mixture of pre-bookable and same day appointments available across the week. They may be with a doctor but could also be with another healthcare professional such as a primary care practitioner or a nurse. We are keen to balance the importance of continuity of care with convenient access for patients whilst ensuring that the service is safe. To book an evening or weekend appointment please contact your registered practice during normal opening times, this will help us to signpost you to the most appropriate option for your particular problem. By contacting us we can fully explain the process, ensure that the booking is appropriate (as we hope to be able to meet your needs by offering an appointment with your usual GP) and cover all the relevant information (and consent) that we need to before we book an appointment for you.

This is NOT a walk in service and anyone who turns up at a practice without a pre-booked appointment will be asked to contact the Out of Hours service.

Recently in th South West, NHS England South SW have received a number of reports from GP practices regarding patients who have been "cold called" by representatives of various companies.  These callers (both by phone and in person), seem to know the patient's medical history and sometimes say that this information has been obtained from the GP Practice.  NO GP PRACTICE WILL EVER DIVULGE YOUR MEDICAL HISTORY.

If you don't currently have access and you would like to book your appointments and order your repeat medication online you need to request a 'Emis Access Registration Letter' from us.  You can do this by either ringing us on 01935 850225 or you can e-mail us at  Just put 'EMIS ACCESS' in the subject box and just put your name and date of birth in the message area and we will post you the letter.  It would also be helpful if you could put your up to date mobile number on there aswell and we can update your medical records.  This is sometimes an easier way for us to get hold of you if we ever needed to.  Thank you.  Please see attached Statement of Intent.
